If there's any movie that will encourage wary crowds to head back to theaters, it might just be In The Heights. (Take a cue from our very own Gayle King, who has seen it twice in one week.) From Broadway to Hollywood, the highly anticipated musical could not come at a better time, and it's the cast that brings a special energy to this film adaptation, which Oprah called "an amazing, profound American story" that gives everyone "an opportunity to see themselves."
The film (which is also streaming on HBO Max) is a spirited revival of the Tony-Award winning Broadway musical of the same name that was released on the Great White Way in 2008. Shot on location in Washington Heights, the creators Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes teamed up with director Jon Chu to bring it all to the big screen. Miranda told CBS news, "I'm just very proud that this is a musical about Latino immigrants that is written by Latinos with joy and love."
Get acquainted with the cast—including Broadway vets (you might recognize Anthony Ramos from Hamilton)—and a few relative newcomers.

Jimmy Smits as Kevin Rosario
The Emmy-award-winning actor and TV veteran (NYPD Blue, The West Wing, Dexter) is a New York native. "I'm so happy that they fought hard in terms of doing it actually on streets that were in Washington Heights. We didn't eat catering, we didn't have movie catering. We were going to restaurants there in the community because... they knew we were there and they were so supportive on every level. I can't imagine having shot it, like, 'Oh yeah, we got brownstones in Canada and Toronto, we can shoot.' Nah," the actor told People.

Leslie Grace may be a rookie in the movie business, but she’s no stranger to the spotlight. Her singing and songwriting skills prepared her for what would inevitably be a career-changing role as Nina Rosario—the ambitious student who struggles to find her path. And it’s safe to say that she nailed it (yes, we’re talking about that breathtaking balcony scene).
